What is twin dna test?

Twin zygosity testing is used to determine if twins are identical or fraternal based on their DNA. Identical twins have exactly the same DNA, while fraternal twins do not.

As twins develop in the mother’s womb, identical twins share the same placenta, while fraternal twins develop in two separate placentas. When the twins are born, doctors are sometimes unable to determine if the twins developed in the same placenta because the placenta may have been damaged. Additionally, it is difficult to identify identical twins based on appearances in cases when medical records are lost.

A twin zygosity test is the only way to conclusively determine if twins are identical or fraternal.

If twins are identical, their DNA profiles will be exactly the same. The DNA profiles of fraternal twins will only have some similarities, just like the results of a standard siblingship DNA test. For a twin zygosity test, only the two twins are needed for testing.

When is it used?

Twin zygosity testing is often performed out of curiosity. You or your twin children may want to know if they are identical or fraternal twins.

Sometimes it is medically important that you find out if your children are identical twins. Identical twins are perfect organ donors for each other, for example.
