In-Home Paternity Testing

How does paternity testing work?

Paternity testing is a fast, accurate, and conclusive way of determining whether a man is the biological father of a child. It is a genetic test that compares a child's DNA profile with an alleged father's and looks for evidence of DNA inheritance between them. Home paternity testing is a simple process that starts and ends in the comfort of your own home.

Free Paternity Test Kit

After you order a DNA paternity test collection kit, simply gather your DNA sample with a cotton swab and send it to Advanced DNA Testing with the provided stamped envelope. A few days later, you get your results via mail or email (your choice). It's that easy!

  1. Ordering your paternity test

The first step is to order a paternity test. You can do this by either completing our online order form or calling our friendly DNA Test Consultants anytime at 1-877-8-FATHER. When you order a paternity test, we will send you a DNA test sample collection kit.
  2. Collecting your DNA test samples

Using the DNA test sample collection kit, you will follow the step-by-step instructions for swabbing your mouth and the mouths of your child and the alleged father. This can be done in the privacy of your own home. You will then place the swabs into separately marked envelopes, gather the samples together, and mail them back to our DNA testing laboratory with the provided.

  3. Returning your DNA test samples to Advanced DNA

Your collection kit will include a postage-paid, addressed envelope for mailing back your samples. All you need to do is simply place your DNA test samples into the envelope and drop off the envelope into the outgoing mailbox.
  4. Analyzing your DNA test samples

Once we receive your DNA test samples, we will begin the laboratory portion of the paternity test. Your samples will be identified, marked, and entered into the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) process. In PCR, the DNA test samples will be amplified and analyzed for relationships between people. Our laboratory technologists will compare the DNA test samples to see if certain DNA markers are present at specific locations in the sample. In a paternity test, if the child has several markers that are located in the same place as the alleged father, then the alleged father could be the biological father of the child.
  5. Reviewing your paternity test results

When the lab technologists have completed the analysis of your samples, they will provide the paternity test results to our PhD-holding lab directors for review. These PhDs will review the results to make sure that they are accurate. They will then complete and sign off on a report of the results, stating that the alleged father could be biologically related to the child ("included," with a probability of paternity, or the probability that he is the father, of 99.99% or higher) or that the alleged father could NOT be biologically related to the child ("excluded," with a probability of paternity of 0%). The DNA testing laboratory will then send you the results.
  6. Receiving your paternity test results

Our DNA testing laboratory will prepare a report of your paternity test results when they have completed the testing. We will then mail the report to you with an explanation of the results. You should receive your results within 5 days after your sample was received at our lab. If you chose an accelerated results service, you may receive your results in 1 day of 3 days from the date of the DNA test sample receipt at the lab.
